The Spread of Rugby Rugby is believed to have spread to america by 1874 when a number of prestigious colleges were challenged by Mcgill University in Montreal. Rugby was brought to New Zealand by Charles Monroe who was studying in England in the 1860's and learnt the game during his time there. When he returned to new Zealand he suggested it to his local football club and in May 1870 New Zealands first rugby match was played. The Romanians learnt rugby from France in the late 1800's, Argentina learnt it from English and Scottish migrants and it was played in Canada by British setllers.
The Origins Of The Rugby Ball The ball was first invented by William Gilbert and Richard Lindon. It was first made of fours sectors of leather around an inflated pigs bladder. The shape and size of the ball would depend on the pig bladder. The pig bladder would be blown up by breathing into it which wasn't a particularly nice job as it would be rotting. In the early 1960's Lindon introduced the rubber inner to the rugby ball.
How It All Began It is believed that rugby evolved from an early version of the game that was played in Japan thousands of years ago.There are also other stores that a schoolboy called William Webb Ellis was playing a game of football and picked up the ball and started running with it, although there is faults in this story as football was not invented when this is believed to have happened.
